I ONLY workout to music. I need it, I love it, it makes me work harder.
When making a playlist I always start with a warm-up song for walking, then a song with a great beat that gets me running. Song placement is a big deal...you want your favorite songs at the points where you are generally the most tired, then end with some good cool-down tunes for walking and lots of stretching.
